The Art of Hand Combing
Materials fee: $16, includes 40g fibre kit, diz, diz threader, mister and notes
Mindful fibre preparation has a direct correlation to the quality of your handspun yarn. Furthermore, as you hand comb your fibre, you develop a deeper understanding of its characteristics before you actually begin to spin. Kim provides students with clean fibre and guides them, using whatever style of combs they own*, through the traditional steps of a worsted fibre preparation. This includes: misting, oiling, jigging, planking, dizzing and the turning of combed slivers into roving. For your efforts you are rewarded with the ultimate in hand combed fibre. This seminar reviews some of the different styles of combs on the market and the features to look for when purchasing a set of combs.
Time permitting Kim will demonstrate the use of Russian paddle combs, mini combs and the blending hackle.
*Students who do not own a set of combs, interested in learning more about wool combing, are welcome to audit the seminar.
Students should bring:
· Diz and threader (if you have them)
· Note taking supplies
