Pebble Weave on the Inkle Loom (Part I and II)
This pick-up technique, normally associated with South American backstrap looms, can also be woven on an inkle loom. The pattern portion of the inkle band is warped with two colours. Without pick-up, they weave as horizontal bars; with pick-up, more intricate designs will appear. Students must warp their looms prior to class following a specific dark/light threading draft. In class, participants will be introduced to a Pebble Weave Grid and shown how to select the pick-up threads in each pattern row. They’ll also learn to chart their own designs.
This seminar is suitable for weavers who have woven on inkle looms. They must be able to read a 2-shed threading draft and set up their inkle loom based on that draft. Suitable warp yarns are 3/2 or 5/2 mercerized cotton or 4/8 cotton (choose just one of those weights) in at least 3 colours.
Please bring a warped inkle loom, weft yarn, a fine double-pointed knitting needle (about 6” or 15cm long to use as a pick-up stick), thread scissors and pencil and eraser to class.
